School is back in full-swing, as evidenced by my lack of posting for the past week!
Let not my absence suggest that things are going badly, though. On the contrary, I continue to waltz and frolic happily on Cloud 9. I wake up each morning feeling content, and I go to bed feeling at peace. Who could ask for more? With that generally as the backdrop for the week, let’s review in more detail.
CLASSES: I am taking Criminal Procedure: Adjudication, Non-Profit Organizations, Elder Law, UCC I: Sales & Commercial Paper, and Introduction to Employee Health Plans: ERISA & HIPAA. My favorite of the bunch? UCC, by far. I forgot how much I really enjoyed my contracts class during my 1L year. It was that class that convinced me I’d want to do transactional business work as opposed to litigation, actually. (Everyone join me in the laughter that comes with that hindsight in which you revel gaily in the irony!) Despite my change of heart as to career goals, I still really enjoy contract principles, which is probably good since many of my litigation assignments and cases will deal largely with contracts and UCC concepts, at least in a broad manner. I enjoy UCC so greatly and dislike Criminal Procedure so much that I dropped my next-semester Criminal Procedure class in favor of taking UCC II: Secured Transactions.
Now, I should note that there is nothing inherently wrong with my Crim Pro class. The professor is fine, the reading is reasonable, the concepts are not too difficult, and all around, it’s a fine class. But in my 1L year, when everyone loves criminal law and detests civil procedure and contracts, I found myself intrigued by civ pro, loving contracts, and utterly bored by crim law. The criminal law and criminal system just do nothing for me. I find myself utterly apathetic toward the whole subject area. Which is strange, considering the fact that I grew up believing I would become a prosecutor, D.A., and judge in the criminal system. But once I really got the chance to be exposed to the criminal law area, I realized that… it interested me about as much as watching paint dry. Maybe less. I have no firm explanation for that.
The end result is that I think I may actually end up being happier in the UCC class, even though the GPA curve is not as high in that class as it is in Crim Pro (in other words, it’s tougher to get an A in UCC than it is in Crim Pro). However, the worst I could see myself doing in UCC I or II would be around a B, and that’s a completely acceptable grade. Besides… I have a job! I don’t have to go for the Honors A all the time! (Yet, those of you who know me, realize that I probably will anyway. At least in those classes I kind of love.)
JUDGE HARPER: I met with Judge Mary Harper yesterday. I externed with her last year, and had a great experience. This semester I will be working with her to complete my pro-bono hours requirement (20 hours). I have no doubt that I’ll get some very interesting cases from her, and I know that I will again enjoy her straightforward, what-you-see-is-what-you-get approach to life and advice and work. She seemed genuinely excited about my job offer (and acceptance) with B&T, and said that she could tell I was happy, that it showed.
A MODIFIED MIA WALLACE: It’s no secret that I adore Quentin Tarantino films, and his characters, with my favorites being Beatrix (Kill Bill) and Mia Wallace (Pulp Fiction). Inspired by a vision of a modernized version of Mia Wallace’s famous bob hairstyle, this morning I had my hair trimmed (no length lost, of course; after all, it’s finally to my shoulders! almost.), and I had my stylist give me some bangs. They aren’t heavy or as bluntly symmetrical as the Mia Wallace original. They actually sweep a bit to one side, and they really look lovely. I’m exceedingly pleased with the style.
For the first time in… nearly a decade (!!), I did not get my hair colored at the salon. This summer, when I was away from my dearly-trusted stylist Renee, I refused to let anyone else touch my hair, so for three months, my reddish-tint gradually started to fade from my hair, leaving it more and more naturally brunette. And I kind of liked it. So, at least for now, I’m going to continue letting my hair return to its natural color.
And yes, I do realize that my life is almost too thrilling for publication. (wink)
Take care, and check 6.
