Where is the U, anyway?

by Marissa on 18 May 2008

in Sidenotes & Curiosities

Who decided that "curious" has two of the letter u, but "curiosity" should be stripped of the second u?

That bugs me every time I write the word. It should be curiousity. The -ity of being curious. Who goes around being "curios?" Aren’t "curios" figurines that get put in cabinets named for such a purpose? The Black Eyed Peas asked, "Where Is The Love." Well, I ask, "Where is the U"?

Then again, this sort of wondering is exactly what makes me the "perpetual Curious George" that I proudly acknowledge myself to be… but you know what? So was Einstein. And Voltaire. And Eleanor Roosevelt. See for yourself–Frederic Premji at BlogMotivation offers up 22 examples of my fellow Curious Georges in his 22 Great Quotes On Curiosity.

I wonder if any of them figured out what happened to curiosity’s other u…

I think the physical presence of scratchable vinyl or unspoolable tapes, or the extremely kitten-vulnerable compact disc, is what gave us — particularly Metallica — the idea that sounds are something you can hold in your hand. I think that’s why kids don’t get intellectual property fighting, because songs don’t exist in three dimensions again, which means the argument takes place across a line that’s impossible to explain, and results in the parties talking about two different things entirely. As ever, I side with the kids.

Quote it! “Why do I think it’s not beautiful”

April 13, 2007 Sidenotes & Curiosities

The first question I ask myself when something doesn’t seem to be beautiful is why do I think it’s not beautiful. And very shortly you discover that there is no reason.

Quote it! “Not sure about people anymore”

March 28, 2007 Sidenotes & Curiosities

I’m not sure about people anymore. They’re responsible for some pretty nutty stuff. Individuals I’m crazy about though.

Quote it! “I’ve heard all the whining”

October 10, 2006 Sidenotes & Curiosities

I’ve heard all the whining, okay? What I haven’t heard are results. And until I hear ‘em, I’m just talking to a well-connected joke in an Armani suit.

Quote it! “Not Falling”

September 28, 2006 Behind The Monitor

Always known in all of my time I’m a little left of center now
Reflect as I realize that all I need is to find the middle pillar path
To sit like the sun by a star in the sky and just be.

I stand, not crawling, not falling down
I’ll bleed for no one but myself
