Great thoughts, Marissa.

#2 and #10 speak most clearly to me.

I especially like the idea of just one small step at a time. I often think way too far in to the future on probabilistic contingencies and freeze on decision making. ("How much profit will I make when I sell this house ten years from now?" "Oh, wait....I have to buy the house first. rigggghhttt.").

Remembering to just take one step in the right direction keeps me focused. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Hi, Marissa!

This list is so remarkable and inspirational... it really hits home for me. Methinks I have tons of personal growth pondering to do to get to the level of insight required to create a list for myself... but, then, I have to remind myself that it's the journey, not the destination!
Thanks for putting yourself out there.

Just for the record, you've been an inspiring / supporting part of many of the numbers above, not just 7. Debt of gratitude, and such. And someday (whenever that might be) when you sketch out your own list, I'll be right there on the sidelines whooping and cheering loudly. (I'm already doing that for you, anyway, list or no.) :)

I haven't gotten the chance to read Gretchen's book yet, but I have really enjoyed her blog over the past few years (and I don't have many blogs that have stayed at the top of my list of favorites for long stretches like that). I'm looking forward to reading the book and absolutely recommend her blog.

And if you ever ponder sharing your manifesto on your blog, pleaseohpleaseohplease take this a vote in favor. I dig your writing anyway, and I'm perpetually fascinated by peoples' manifestos / personal statements / etc. so I know I'd dig yours!

Speechless!

Okay, not entirely. :)

Reading this list of personal commandments allows me to glimpse into your heart and really speaks to me about the kind of life I want to live. I read almost every one of them saying, "Me, too!"

I imagine it's a powerful exercise to creates your own list (as compared to me-too-ing someone else's). I'm not yet up to the challenge, but you've got me thinking about it seriously.

Thank you for sharing your personal commandments, Marissa. I feel so blessed to know you and have the shared opportunity to grow your Number 7. :)

Hi Marissa:

Very cool list! Thank you for sharing this. Thanks for recommending The Happiness Project, too...I've been hearing a lot about it and I'm intrigued. I really like your "staying present" commandment, which I feel is very important. I also like the idea of being non-judgmental...this is something I try to live by as well.

Me, well I don't have commandments but I did create a little manifesto for myself a couple years ago. It contains about seven key points on how I want to live my life and one of them is to stay in the present moment. I guess it is sort of a written version of a vision board...it's a reminder to me how I would like to live and conduct myself. Its a great guide for me and seems to be working. Thanks again for sharing your insights here!

Making the list might've been a few years coming, but living up to it will be a lifelong endeavor, no doubt. It will absolutely require me to pay a lot of attention to #10, and allow myself to take small steps in the right direction, rather than expect to meet each goal 100% all the time. (Though that's what Perfection would have me believe was necessary!)

I didn't grow up in a 12-step environment, but I too have always loved the Serenity Prayer. We always had it displayed in our home when I was growing up--and I have a magnet with the prayer on it that I keep very visible to me as a reminder. When I'm completely at a loss as to what to do next, I return to it to remind myself that the first two things I can do are (a) acknowledge what I can and cannot control, and (b) accept those that I can't. (Often easier said than done, but I try!)

Thanks for stopping by, Albert! You're right--allowing others is a very simple phrase that holds enormous power, if done unconditionally. And I'm not about to act like I'm anywhere close to that yet... it's a guideline for me that I aspire to most days and meet only sometimes. But it's one that I believe in, which keeps me motivated to keep trying.
