Congrats to Chaz, Lex, and Sam

by Marissa on 9 March 2006

in uncategorized

I’ve been negligent in posting some much-deserved congrats to the fellas in my family. So, without further ado, let’s get to dolling out the props, shall we?

CHAZ:
After turning in a phenomenal performance on his ACTs (e.g., he missed one–ONE–question in the advanced geometry section, if I’m getting that title right), he managed to knock the SATs outta the proverbial park as well, nailing the math sections in both the ACT and SAT to the tune of, like, the 99th percentile. Ridiculous. Absurd. And damn good. Congrats, Chaz!

ALEX:
My “little” brother became the first of all the siblings, cousins, etc. in his generation (yes–in this family, not in the world, for you nit-picking sorts) to become a homeowner, closing on his condominium on March 1. I’ve been to visit his new homestead, and even through my perpetual coughing, fever and exhaustion, it was absolutely beautiful. Great living space, great layout, beautiful views. “Sir,” “spud,” “Lexy” is so grown-up! Congrats, Lex!

SAM:
Since, approximately, the utterance of his first words, my cousin Sam has been a natural actor and storyteller, creating full stories and tales for which he would act out the voices and mannerisms of each character. Developing an insatiable hunger for knowledge about history, especially relating to sociopolitic characteristics of different eras and global conflicts, also prompted him to author works–short stories, poems, and the like–best characterized as historic fiction. He has recently employed both of these talents to great success, landing a lead comic role in his high school play, and racking up a slew of big wins in his radio announcing competitions in his high school speech team. He recently qualified for state competition, and came in 3rd at Sectionals. Congrats, Sam!

Hearty applause and accolades to all three of my talented relatives. I eagerly await your next moves and future successes!

Happy Trip-Around-The-Sun Day, Mums!

by Marissa on 31 January 2006

in uncategorized

A belated birthday wish to my Mums, who celebrated another “Trip Around the Sun” yesterday, January 29th.

(I am not a totally thoughtless daughter, I swear–I didn’t forget her birthday. I was actually at home for her birthday, and I was without my nearly omnipresent computer, believe it or not, so I didn’t post for the weekend. And here you thought I’d forgotten about you, my beloved blog readers!) ;-)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MUMS!

(And we ALWAYS get a sheet cake! hehe)

Behind the Curtain

by Marissa on 27 January 2006

in uncategorized

I realized that I haven’t posted anything “personal” for a couple of days, deferring instead to the blogger’s favorite tool: linking to and expounding on stuff found on other sites. This probably isn’t incredibly disappointing, I imagine, as nothing really earthshaking has occurred in the past few days that would make any of my readers feel left out of the loop.

In good news, Grandpa’s recovery is still going well. He got to come home on Monday evening, only five days post-surgery. I’m very happy that all is still going well, and that he was able to come home so soon. Thank you again to all of you that have stopped me, emailed me, or called to wish my Grandpa and family well; your kindness is much appreciated!

In short, this blog hasn’t and won’t be just a reiteration of the really fun/cool/interesting stuff I find online, though that will remain a big part of it. I just figured I’d spare the ‘net my “Well, today was… another day!” dull-ity in favor of celeb stuff and funny links. Because I’m nice like that.

Check 6!

January 15, 2006 uncategorized

I am back in Ossian so that I can be with my family for several days. The reason is already known to my “nearests & dearests,” and suffice to say that I am exceedingly grateful to have such wonderful, caring, and understanding friends who are ready to “circle the wagons” when someone’s in need [...]

New Year & Nostalgia

January 1, 2006 uncategorized

Three years ago, amidst a family room chock full of my family and family friends, my grandfather lifted a glass of champagne and toasted to the idea that “This is the year when you start becoming a lawyer!” It was the dawn of 2003, and indeed, I began law school that August.
Now, three years [...]

Comfort Food: Apple Rings

December 1, 2005 uncategorized

Growing up, my maternal grandparents lived about 6 hours away from me in Elgin, Illinois. We would go visit them as often as possible. And every time we visited them, I remember Grandma always had a jar of apple rings in her refrigerator. Cinnamon-spiced apple rings, floating in a red liquid… and [...]
