Random Act of Coffee

by Marissa on 26 October 2005

Sleepy and wishing for more time cozied up in bed, I headed for the Starbuck’s drive-through this morning. I was waiting in the usual long morning line of cars, just singing along with iPod and bopping to my tunes. I placed my order, and waited patiently in line behind a white truck with a yellow light on its roof, which reminded me of the INDOT trucks but this truck had no markings on it.

I could see the man in the truck ahead of me get his beverage, and then chat with the barrista a bit. She went back in the window, came back out, took some money from him, nodded, smiled, chatted a bit… then the man dropped a good-sized tip in the jar and drove off. I thought, “What a nice guy; that was a really decent tip!”

So I pulled up to the window to get my coffee, and the woman handed me my coffee and said, “The man ahead of you just paid for your coffee.” I said, “He did?! Really? Well… how nice!”

I tried to catch up with the truck, hoping to at least give him a “Thank you” wave, but he had already left the Starbuck’s drive by the time I got there, and he was heading in the exact opposite direction from what I was heading.

So I don’t know who you are, Man In The White Truck With Yellow Light Who Tips Well, but thank you. You made my morning… possibly my week… with your random act of coffee kindness. I’ll do my best to pass on the smile.
