My Happy Little Animals

So, I just got home from a fun and relaxing evening with Ms. Cosmo Peterson and the N8, and I gave all my critters their nightly pinch of food, and their nightly yogurt drops… and then Warrick and Grissom “talked” to each other for a couple of minutes.

Seriously, as it turns out, gerbils “speak” audibly to one another. It’s this super faint sound, almost like an ultra-quiet chirp. The first several times it happened, it was so faint and so brief that I wasn’t sure what I was hearing. Then I finally realized that was them “talking” to one another. I love it now. I listen for it. It’s a very comforting, peaceful little sound. They sit in close proximity to one another and “talk.” Like a gerbil tea party or something.

And whenever Dooley gets her yogurt drop, she winks. Which is actually a sign of extreme happiness and comfort for a gerbil–one-eyed blinking. So between that and Warrick & Grissom’s contented chirping, it makes me all happy when it’s treat time for them at night.

Also, I discovered that Captain Furious will “chase” a flashlight beam on the wall, just like a cat. He’s so funny. He walks around his cage, “following” the beam, and when I turn it off, he stands up on his back legs and looks around for it, like he just misplaced it or something. Very amusing. Who knew–hamsters will chase light on a wall?

It is lessons like that, that make me so happy I went to law school. ;-)

(…and yes, Mums and Daddio, this post was adapted from an email I sent to you this evening.)

This post was the cutest ever. I actually learned from a friend of mine who is pregnant that you can play with your unborn baby the same way. You put a flashlight on the outside of your womb and move it back and forth and the kid will try to chase the light.

This is completely off-topic but while I’m thinking of kids playing with flashlights, I thought I’d share. You can actually teach your kid sign language long before they learn to talk. (This makes sense when you think about the way kids develop). You can actually teach your baby to tell you when its hungry or wet. Beats incessant screaming anyday for all involved. Apparently kids that learn these simple signs before they’re even a year old have a much easier time mastering spoken language when they’re older because they are already familiar with the concept. Neat, huh?
