A few moments ago, I emailed my secretary to ask her to print off the requisite copies of what is, I believe, my final memorandum of the summer.
Pause, to allow that to sink in.
For two years, I wondered what it would be like to be a Summer Associate (though I never dreamt I’d do that at a “Big Firm”). For two years, I convinced myself that I probably wouldn’t be any good at “this law thing” out in the real world.
And now, 11 1/2 weeks into my 12 week adventure as a Summer Associate, I’ve just finished my final memorandum. All the memoranda I’ve done this summer have received glowing reviews and garnered attention for the way I write, and the fact that, apparently, I do so very quickly. Which all boggles my brain, because, as I said above, I spent the past two years being absolutely certain that I would be no good at being a lawyer, or a Summer Associate, and trying to figure out what my back-up plan would be for the day when someone at my summer job would approach me and disappointedly tell me to hit the road.
That day didn’t come. And as it turns out, I have LOVED every minute of being a Summer Associate at a “Big Firm.” I couldn’t have designed a job and an office better suited to my personality, temperment, and interests. Do I realize how incredibly fortunate I am to have had the experience I had this summer? Oh, you betcha. I realize it and marvel at it several times a day. (At least!)
I can’t believe I finished my final memo. (I can’t believe I can now accurately describe the application of the assignor estoppel doctrine as it applies to patent cases either, but that’s another story.)
