I love me some award season photos! (Big surprise, right?) The fact that I have seen exactly none of the nominated movies never stops me from having an opinion on things (again, big surprise, eh?). Here I present to you the Notable Moments from the 2006 Golden Globe Awards.
Top honors in the Best Dressed category go, hands-down, to the radiant Jessica Alba. Proving that “beautiful” and “sexy” and “glowing” have absolutely nothing to do with how much skin one shows (or how anorexic one looks, ahem, Eva Longoria and Teri Hatcher)… Jessica stuns in a flowing, classically tailored Valentino gown.

Second Place in the Best Dressed category goes to Felicity Huffman, the only one of the Desperate Housewives I can still tolerate, as she is also the only one with a modicum of actual talent (the others seem to confuse “talent” with “ability to starve oneself until collarbone juts out disturbingly from neck”).
Felicity dazzled in a gown that seemed to invoke a combination of Grecian Goddess-esque grace with Jane Austen-esque stylings. Superb.

Third Place for Best Dressed goes to the immensely talented (and finally receving long-deserved recognition!) Sandra Oh. Simple, elegant, classy.

And finally, an honorable mention in Best Dressed goes to Queen Latifah, who chose a turquoise stunner gown that looked magnificent against her skin tone, hugged her in all the right areas, and flowed gracefully as she walked. Topping it off with shoulder-dusting diamond earrings and a simple, understated sparkler pendant, the Queen dressed to fit her name. Brava.

Steve Carrell (The Daily Show, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) and William Petersen (CSI: Crime Scene Investigators) take First Place in Best Non-Couple Pairings. Both guys are funny, talented, smart, and relatively down-to-earth, making them positively crush-worthy in my book. You can keep your Matt Damons and Josh Duhamels–I’d take Mr. Carrell or Mr. Petersen anyday!

Earning second place in the Best Non-Couple Pairings is Eric Bana (Munich, Troy) and Kate Beckinsale (Underworld: Evolution), both looking picture-perfect as they teamed up to present one of the evening’s awards. There’s something about Eric’s quiet confidence and understated elegance and Kate’s nearly princess-esque glamour that together made other stars yearn for instant airbrushing. Beautiful pair.

Finally, taking “honors” in the Best Non-Couple Pairings is the increasingly frightening-looking Melanie “Dear God, please let me stop aging via plastic surgery and botox!” Griffith, and her apparently coked-out daughter, Dakota Johnson. Dakota was “Miss Golden Globes,” and in each of her many appearances on stage, she was slouching, dazed, and seemed perpetually ready to fall over and/or pass out. Like mother, like daughter…

First-place Cutest Couple goes to Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams, who always seem to look adorable together, whether they’re taking a coffee break with new daughter Matilda Rose, or whether they’re dolled up on the red carpet. It’s Hollywood, so it’s anyone’s guess as to how long this pairing will last, but they sure are cute for the time being!

The second-place Cutest Couple goes to Nancy Walls and Steve Carrell, both comedians, both very smart and funny, and both looking fabulous. The acceptance speech Carrell delivered following his win for his role in NBC’s The Office was, according to him, penned by his wife… and it was one of the evening’s best on-stage moments. Funny, sweet, and on-spot delivery, and Nancy’s reaction to it was equally sweet and funny. [TRIVIA TIDBIT: In the movie The 40-Year-Old Virgin, when Steve's character takes his girlfriend's daughter to the health clinic, the clinic worker who fields Steve's questions is his real-life wife, Nancy.]

Tied for Second place in the Cutest Couple category is William H. Macy and Felicity Huffman. A long-time happily wed couple, these two are either consistently deeply in love and respectful of one another, or they’re just brilliant actors… every apperance they make together shows them being respectful, supportive, and genuinely happy for each other’s successes. Whatever they may be separately, when they’re together, they really seem to shine.

The first shout-out/nod goes to George Clooney, shown here accepting an award for his role in the movie Syriana. I never hopped on the “I love Clooney” bandwagon, because I just didn’t quite see what the big deal was about the guy. However, as he gets older, and he starts to take on that older-gentleman distinguished handomeness, I can see it. I thought he looked great at the Globes, and he looked like he was actually having a good time (and not taking the whole thing too seriously).

Shout-out/nod numero dos goes to Mariah Carey. While I don’t think her dress choices are ever really great, this one was not too bad, relatively speaking. And I don’t care what the tabloids say about her; I think that she looks better than ever with her recent “weight gain” (i.e., she probably began eating something more substantial than lettuce and water). She looks healthy, curvy and happy. Good for her.

And the third shout-out/nod goes to Steve Carrell, who I think looks so charmingly cute in this photo, that he gets another spot on my list, despite his multiple appearances above. Hey, it’s my blog, I’ll post Carrell as often as I want to. (If Jon Stewart had been at the Golden Globes, you’d be seeing multiple photos of him as well.)

Finally, a shout-out/nod goes to the cast of ABC’s frustratingly intriguing show Lost. From left, (character names, not real names) we have: Mr. Eko, Kate, Sun, Lily, Claire (how much like a princess does she look?!), Charlie, Michael, Shannon, Sayid, and Charlie. I’m increasingly crushing on Mr. Eko. Ooooh, he is a handsome fella. Of course, Sayid is perpetually eye-candy too. But where was Locke? I can’t believe they celebrated sans-Locke!
