The “Friday Menagerie†is a handful of links & tweets & other goodnesses from around the web that I gather throughout the week and then corral into a post. Stuff I loved, found fascinating, got a kick out of, etc. Please to enjoy!
I’ve Been Linking About You
- Sometimes the creative journey is fireworks and gasping bliss and frolicking in ideas. Other times, it’s the onion-prompted tears and knife-nicked finger that make you think stationery might be preferable to stew. Trust me–Hiro Boga makes that make sense in a very relateable way in Making Stew: Onions, Om & The Creative Journey.
- Religions & traditions & beliefs & practices fascinate me. I’m always enthralled when someone shares a personal journey through belief. Apricot Tea (Ev’Yan Nasman) writes frankly and openly (her standard writing style) about losing her religion, and the one thing she knows with absolute certainty. Predictably, I was enthralled.
- “Won’t it be cool to have a business model that beings with ‘Welcome everyone as an anticipated guest. Wish their family well. Light starch. No creases.’” –Crystal Williams, also divulging that she’s never ironed her husband shirts & some wise insights about what we’ll pay more for.
- On a day when work or email or family or life itself seems wildly out of control, peruse Lori Deschene’s list of 50 things you can control right now. One item she mentions that I champion? “When you answer someone’s question–or email or call.” Holla.
- What do beige lipstick, a ’60s revival, Susan Powter & masculine dance moves have in common? According to Livvy Jams, they’re all ’90s trends due for a comeback. The article is swell for a quick jaunt through some ’90s nostalgia & some laughs. (Also fun: Livvy’s 5 things we kept from the ’90s in which she notes that “It takes conviction–not just vocabulary–to create revolution.”)
- Hugh MacLeod puts the Gapingvoid spin on popularity.
Once Twitten, Twice Shy
- The one and only @MartinWhitmore: “Mmm, you smell good.” Me: “I do!? That is the smell of sweat and despair, Marty.” –@worldmegan
- You know it’s 2010 when you’ve ‘friended’ the Dalai Lama. –@DanielleLaPorte
- Sometimes your path will be long, but it’s better to follow it than to follow the wrong one that’s shorter. –@CharlieGilkey
- The time you spend too afraid to get it wrong is the time you are wasting not discovering how to get it right. –@Pistachio
- You keep predicting. I’ll keep working. –@ChrisBrogan
- Overheard: ‘It’s hard being made out of meat and chemistry.’ –@RockYourDay
- Sometimes I am a Girl Scout in a Mafia world. –@pamslim
